Executive Summary
This is a proposal for a grant to the King World Missions Women Support Group in Mutendere, Lusaka. The group operates under a charity in the same name, headed by Pastor Ralph Sebente. The Women Support Group was started by the latter in July 2005. The activities were developed by the members themselves and aim to strengthen the livelihoods of the Group members in two ways: A) by professional skills trainings and B) by a communal enterprise the profits of which are to feed into a revolving fund which will be used to improve their individual businesses.
Hence the project has two separate elements. The professional skills training will be organized by Mrs Agnes Chisenga and requires a total of ZKW 1,190,000. The chicken rearing enterprise will be coordinated by Mrs Phiri (tel 097-846065), and requires a total of ZKW 11,707,000.
The project preparations will start immediately. If the grant money could be released in December, the project can be completed in June 2006.
Background
King World Missions is a non-profit, faith-based NGO founded by two pastors and their wives in Lusaka, Zambia in 2001 under the name of NOW Ministries, the acronym standing for Neglected Orphans and Widows. In 2005 the Lusaka branch of NOW Ministries continued under a new name: King World Missions (www.kingworldmissions.org, KWM). It is led by pastor Ralph Sebente and his wife Agnes Chisenga, assisted by a board made up of three more community members and a fundraising advisor. KWM’s aims are to support orphans and widows, being two particularly vulnerable groups in the community where they are based (Kalingalinga and Mutendere townships, Lusaka). In the first place, KWM’s focus was on setting up a community school for children who have no access to the mainstream education. The school is supported by a small number of benefactors in the US and a foundation-in-the-making in the Netherlands, set up by a volunteer. It is housed in a rented building (Plot No C736/A, Mutendere), which will soon be too small for the children, and the plot does not allow for extension of the school. KWM is now striving to acquire a plot of its own.
The second activity KWM started is a Support Group for women (most of them are widows) staying in the direct vicinity of the KWM School. The group, called King World Missions Women Support Group, now comprises of 24 members including an Executive of 7. Most of the members have orphans (their own or others) in their care, and are struggling to make a living for the small businesses. They all have a constant lack of capital, as the profits are low and the cost of living high. Therefore they intend to set up a communal enterprise. With the gains they can build up their support group and start a revolving fund to strengthen their individual businesses. With a strong base, the Support Group can bring also other benefits to these women, such as adult education, counseling, community home-based care, etc.
Objectives
The objectives of KWM are to support orphans and widows in their community (Kalingalinga and Mutendere townships in Lusaka). The orphans are served by a community school (now day-care and nursery, in 2006 offering also grade 1) with low fees and a number of free places for special cases. The widows are organized in a Women Support Group, which aims in the first place to improve their members’ livelihoods, and subsequently serve other needs.
Goals
The goals of this project are twofold. The first goal is provide a number of different professional skills trainings to enable the women to have more business options. The second goal is to set up and stock a communal chicken rearing enterprise, with the aim to create a revolving fund to strengthen their individual businesses.
These two things will allow them to be self-sufficient in the future, not only as breadwinners, but also as a Women Support Group.
The first goal is to offer the members four different professional skills trainings, for instance tailoring / tye & die, candle-making, bead-making etc. The exact type of training still has to be determined, in line with the members’ preferences, an assessment of what are profit-making skills, what trainers are available in the area, and what the school as a venue can accommodate. The grant is to provide a fee for the trainers and costs of course materials and refreshments.
The second goal is to use an existing chicken house (owned by one of the members) for a chicken rearing enterprise, selling eggs and broilers. The chicken house will be rented and one or two of the members will be paid as caretakers, and the remaining profit will go into a revolving fund, lent to members on favourable terms as small, short-term loans to strengthen their businesses.
Expected Output
The output of this project will be:
Organization of four or five professional skills training courses.
A chicken-rearing enterprise owned communally by the members, operated by one or two of them.
Description of Target Population
The majority of the members are widows and they are all breadwinners. They range in ages from 24-50 years old, and they all live around the premises of the KWM school. The first members were mothers or guardians of children visiting the school.
Proposed Activities
The activities that will be organized are:
Skills Trainings
Decide on types of skills training
Find trainers
Discuss training requirements and plan dates
Advertise trainings (if necessary)
Purchase training materials

Monitoring and Evaluation
The monitoring and evaluation will be taken care of by pastor Ralph Sebente (founder) and Annet van Hoorn (fundraising advisor). They are also members of the Board of KWM. During the entire period in which the project runs, they will have weekly meetings with the organizer of the skills trainings (Agnes Chisenga), and with the coordinator of the chicken enterprise (Mrs Phiri), and when this person has been named, the caretaker. They will assess progress according to both the Time Plan and the Budget, taking care the money is allocated in a well-planned way, and keeping records of all purchases made.
They will come up with monthly progress reports to be presented to the KWM Board, and to the funder, if desired, at intervals to be decided on.
They will prepare an evaluation report to the funder at the end of the project period, accounting for the expenditure of the money with proper records and a financial report.
